29 year old part time bartender, part time Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has graduated from shaking up mojitos to attempting to shakeup the United States in ways not seen in our lifetime. She has put a controversial new proposal forward named the Green New Deal which the left is jumping on full throttle.
The deal is being embraced by Democratic 2020 front runners Cory Booker (D-N.Y.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) who have all made strong statements endorsing the Green New Deal.
The document reads like something out of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, including such provisions as providing income to all, including those ‘unwilling to work’. The bill also looks to end air travel in the US, and bring fossil fuels to net zero within 12 years. The bill would cost $40 trillion dollars to implement, but, AOC has created a plan to find the funding for the first $2 trillion, the last $38 trillion is still up in the air and can be figured out later.
The bill also aims to ‘guaranteeing a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States.’
In beautiful irony, this comes on the heels of the democrats and far left media outlets like MSNBC freaking out over a $5 billion dollar border wall proposed by President Trump. We previously wrote about a new movement around building the wall with hempcrete, which only cost an estimated $700 million. While the Democrats surely have an argument over the morality or effectiveness over a wall, their goal of gaining more centrist fiscal conservatives can be tossed out the window, thanks to AOC.
The left really love Ocasio-Cortez and are embracing her as one of the bright future faces of a fractured and ambiguous party, here is a recent appearance she did on Colbert’s‘comedy’ show.
Center-left CNN has been a bit more critical of the idea, here is CNN’s Jake Tapper interviewing Ocasio-Cortez.
While this interview is confusing and may include more questions than answers, one thing is very clear. She is in fact 29 years old.
Republican Mitch McConnell has pounced on AOC’s deal. He’s scheduling a floor vote on the Green New Deal in the Senate. “We’ll give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal,” he said Tuesday with a grin.
The Senate vote could reveal a big split in the Democratic caucus. The presidential candidates will vote for it, because they mostly committed to the New Green deal name even before the plan was out.
